  • Ireland Blyth Limited's history spans almost two centuries. Blyth Brothers & Co Ltd. and Ireland Fraser Ltd have both been closely linked to the history of Mauritius since the early nineteenth century.

    The Head Office of Ireland Blyth Limited now proudly stands on the banks of the harbour of Port-Louis, accessible both by land and by sea, a symbolic evocation of the fact that the firm has, for over 170 years now, been involved in shipowning and trade.


      Blyth Brothers & Co. Ltd

    In 1830, James Blyth started Blyth Brothers & Co Ltd in Mauritius as a subsidiary of the firm Thomas Blyth, Sons & Co. Ltd founded in England in 1810

    In 1952, one hundred and twenty years after its establishment in Mauritius, Blyth Brothers ceased being a partnership and became a Limited Liability Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Blyth, Greene, Jourdain & Co. Ltd of England.

    In 1972, after the accession of Mauritius to independence (1968), the shareholders of Blyth, Greene, Jourdain & Co. Ltd, merged with another important house in Port-Louis, Ireland Fraser & Co. Ltd to form Ireland Blyth Limited.

      Ireland Fraser & Co Ltd

    On 1st July 1850, Ireland Fraser & Co. Ltd was formed in Mauritius by George Ireland, Hugh Hunter and James Fraser.
    On 30th June 1860, the name, which originally was Hunter, Ireland & Co., was changed to Ireland Fraser & Co, when Hugh Hunter left.
    In 1927, the firm became Ireland Fraser & Co. Ltd.
    In 1972 when the company merged with Blyth, Greene, Jourdain & Co. Ltd, the main shareholders were two Mauritian companies : Investments Holding Co. Ltd. and Joint Economic Trading Co. Ltd

      Ireland Blyth Limited

    In the new company, Blyth, Greene, Jourdain & Co. Ltd., held 49 % of the shares, and the other two groups, Investments Holding Co. Ltd and Joint Economic Trading Co. Ltd, 51 %.

    In 1973, Ireland Blyth Limited acquired another 4 firms, namely :
    • Currie Fraser Trading Ltd.
    • Emmanuel Cadet & Co. Ltd.
    • Merven Ltd and
    • The Mauritius Cold Storage & Supply Co. Ltd.

    In 1974, WEAL Group sold its interest in Ireland Blyth Limited to Joint Economic Trading Ltd., a subsidiary of Deep River Beau Champ Ltd.

    In 1979, the offices of Ireland Blyth Limited moved to No 10 Dr Ferriere Street Port-Louis in a historic building which housed the Head Office until July 2001, when the Head Office moved to IBL House on the Caudan Waterfront.

    In 2000, Blyth Greene Jourdain & Co Ltd sold its shareholding in Ireland Blyth Limited to Mauritian companies, namely
    • Investments Holding Co Ltd
    • The Anglo Mauritius Assurance Society Ltd
    • Consolidated Invesments & Enterprises Ltd
