Superfoods that may reduce risks of diabetes are available in Mauritius

The incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in children and adolescents is on the rise in Mauritius. CIDP, a pioneer in clinical research on the island conducts cutting-edge
research on diabetes and stresses the importance of adopting a healthier lifestyle. Th is short extract summarises the availability of locally available superfoods that can aid in keeping diabetes at bay.

Prevalence of diabetes

In Mauritius, 22 % of all deaths are directly linked to type 2 diabetes (T2D), ranking the island as number five globally for diabetes-associated deaths. To put matters into perspective, 21 % of the adult multi-ethnic Mauritian population suffer from T2D, whilst in the neighbouring islands of the Seychelles and Madagascar, only 12.3 % and 4.5 % of the population respectively suffer from this metabolic disorder. More recently, we have begun to witness a new phenomenon whereby T2D is no longer limited to adults but has started to emerge in children and adolescents. If this trend continues, according to the International Diabetes Federation, Mauritius will have the second highest number of young people with diabetes in the world by 2030!
